R A A V Recent Accumulations and Appropriated Voices

By Robin Sharpe, Kalayaan Publications, 1997

To Canada’s genuine folk heroes of the 90’s: The hookers and hustlers who sweeten our nights; the traffickers who supply our favourite highs; the strippers and peelers who titillate and entertain us; the taggers who bring art to our dismal facades, and all those who liberate and enrich our lives in face of media and state harassment.

I look on poetry as a way of saying things that would otherwise remain unsaid. Once set forth in poem space an idea can feed on evidence and reasoning and grow robust. Writing poetry gives me courage, I become braver. Unfortunately people like to hear things they believe and tend to believe too many things they hear. Too few things are said too many times and often people merely repeat what they have heard others say. Poetry allows us to view the world in unusual ways and refresh our minds.
